I have a conspiracy theory about Amy Winehouse , on tv from Glastonbury tonight , and who I saw at Hyde Park last night :
Her huge beehive wig , which can be interchangeably worn front to back or back to front hides her siamese - twin's head . . . .
Everybody loves Amy , from tiny tots to old grannies , quite simply , she is the people's pop-princess , our Nation's Sweetheart . . .
Last night , first Nelson Mandela was one of the greatest people alive , then he was one of the greatest people to have ever lived , then he was The Greatest Ever . . .
So Amy is the second-greatest . .
Two people have remarked to me that she's had a 'bad press' , i.e that Newspapers have cruelly victimised her .
No , I'm sorry , but if someone in the 'public eye' makes a spectacle of themselves by publicly being highly intoxicated upon whatever substances , and by being unable to coherently perform at performances that fans have bought tickets for . . . .
Last night and tonight she was in excellent form I thought , despite apparently having been raised from her sick-bed , and , tonight , rambling on about I'm not sure what between songs , and I did'nt see some incident which we may be hearing about tomorrow .
But , back to 'conspracy theories' : As her singing was coherent : Absolutely fine so far as I can tell , was she , tonight , between songs , cynically feigning intoxication and courting more controversy , because she and her record company know that does no harm , only good , to her popularity and record sales ?
Back to Nelson Mandela : I know of a man of 92 who regularly walks in and out of this town , but Nelson , having been kept in a dark cell with little room for exercise for nearly 27 years , because the white south-african apartheid regime knew that if they released him he'd likely lead a popular uprising against them , can have done no good for his long term physical fitness .
And his reconcilliatory instincts , as opposed to what would have been very understandable anger , set an example worth following .
And as S.A President he took the aids/hiv problem more seriously that did most or all of his fellow african leaders .
He cares deeply about Africa , and , we believe , the rest of humanity too .
True heroes are hard to find .
I wish Mandela a wonderful birthday , in about three weeks time , and , we hope , many more to come .
But is he really the 'greatest' human being alive ?
I do'nt know , but if he is'nt , I'd like to know who is .
