'20th Century Blues'

by SloshedAndVexed @ 2008-06-23 - 23:11:56

Is'nt that a lovely track , Simple Mind's Mandela day , that I posted here earlier .
I recall , during the eighties , hearing that drunken young conservative conference delegates had sung 'Hang Nelson Mandela' .
Presumably because he was once some sort of terrorist .
******************
So why  is it that still we hear so much more about Hitler , Nazi's and extermination of Jews than about surely equally horrendous attrocities committed under Stalin , Mao , and others ?
I can only imagine because , ( a ) : The Nazi's uniquely , at least in modern times , tried to exterminate an entire race , and ,
( b ) because  orthodoxical  members of the jewish race are a proud people , many of whom  have wealth , influence and power , and are determined to keep nazi atrocities against them in the public consciousness , in the hope of that preventing such a thing from happening again -  at least  to themselves , and ( c )
Because there's just something uniquely fascinating about the nazi's , and that whereas Stalin is perceived as having been just a vile thug , and china under mao is just too distant for most of us  to relate to , Hitler and his fellow Nazi Scumbags somehow seem  more sinisterly fascinating , and , dare I say 'sexy' : I do'nt mean as in 'erotic' , but more as in allegations against Iraq , prior to the most recent invasion , having been 'sexed up' .
Hitler's ranting speeches now seem almost as ridiculous as Charlie Chaplin's brilliant satirical impersonation  , and yet , think Indiana Jones's films :
There is something uniquely fascinating , though not uniquely evil about hitlerian nazism .

Mandela certainly was a terrorist at the time, but since he won he became a freedom fighter instead. It's undeniably true that "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter".

Several people have asked that question about the Nazis recently. I think the answer is just because WW2 was the biggest and most public war ever, and the other mass slaughters you refer to happened largely behind closed doors.

It amazes me though that kids at school are not taught more about the holacaust, even my daughter natalie at 16 only knew about it through me telling her and watching "Shindlers List, or The Piano" (both briliant films). In the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow they do have a tiny wee bit showing it but it's disapointing and doesn't explain very well (disapointed!) :) x

P.S. I even looked up the word Holacaust to see if i had spelt it properly and it's not even in the dictionary i have. :) x

Thanks , I believe it's spelt holocaust , and it certainly should be taught , though as for auschwitz still being there , and groups of schoolchildren sometimes being taken to visit it , well I have reservations about that ,
good to hear about your new car ,
