Inspired by crazyrainbowblondie I attempted , here last night a little essay about what qualities make people popular or unpopular ; I deleted it after a few minutes as it was'nt good enough .
I suppose perhaps women tend to be more appraised for their looks , and mothering skills whereas men tend to be valued more for their practical skills and energy , although such generalisations constitute a very inexact science .
I read today of the former property tycoon Charles Kane who surgically 'became' a woman , then did'nt like it , so had a second 'sex change' operation to 'become' a man again .
What's in a sense even more disturbing than the gruesome details of the surgical procedures is that , despite being a wealthy man he had at least one of his gender-reasignments under the nhs .
He wanted to be transformed into a beautiful , attractive woman , then later complained that " the worst part of being a woman is being treated as a sex object . I became very irritated when men I was just not interested in kept coming up to me with the worst chat-up lines . . . "
Oh dear , poor chap ! . . . It seems to me that most men who want to 'become' a woman have some romantic notion of 'glamour' , and his having superficially attained that then moaning about it seems a bit maladjusted to me : He'd no doubt have complained even more if no one had shown any interest in him !
I use the 'politically incorrect' 'he' because so far as I'm concerned when we are born male or female that is what we remain for the rest of our lives , except re. a very few rare cases of acute chronosomal abnormalities , in which case surgical intervention may indeed be therapeautically appropiate .
Then the article , in today's 'Mail goes on to explain how one reason behind his decision to revert to manhood was his having been banned from seeing his children , since his first sex-change operation , which sadly for him has'nt changed since his second one , and , I do'nt know how old his children are , but , to have a parent ostensibly change their gender , then back again , during childhood must be potentially distressfully confusing , though if at all possible his children should be gently encouraged to try to understand .
He concludes that 'sex-change' operations should be banned , and says that " We live today in a consumerist society where we all believe we can have everything we want , but too much choice can be a dangerous thing . "
He blames his predicament on the now retired 'gender psychiatrist' Dr. Russell Reid , who in 2007 was reprimanded for serious professional misconduct by the GMC , for his having 'rushed' patients into sex-change treatment .
In our oh-so 'pc' society , pre-op and post-op transexuals are officially one of the favoured , 'beyond reproach' minorities .
I do'nt think that such procedures should be banned from being carried out privately , but there must be legal safeguards to preclude anyone being 'rushed into' such a drastic course of action .
I can't agree with such procedures being available on the nhs for purely psychological reasons : Only , as I said , in rare cases of serious chronosomal abnormality .
Although , for those who can't afford private treatment of course there should be counselling , and possibly other psychological treatments under the nhs for people so unhappy that they seriously feel that drastic mutilation of their bodies to help them to appear to have been born a different gender is the only solution .
In pubs I used to go to I've met , separately , a couple of male pre-op transexuals , who both seemed likeable , even not unattractive , though I'd definitely not want to take that any further than casually chatting , even if they were offering , which they were not .
I am , not by choice , to some degree 'different' , and can sometimes feel strong affinities with others who that may apply to .
I'm presentably ordinairy looking , and , am I 'weird' - ?
Well , do I , for example , dress in nazi uniform , pester people , obsess over peculiar things . . .
No , nothing like that , not in the slightest , but I'm still prone to some social awkwardness , which beyond my control may on occasions lead some to draw erroneous conclusions re. my elegibility to be considered 'normal' .
I'm unpopular because few get the chance to get to know me , and most people steer clear of becoming too involved with anyone who they perceive as having few if any friends , as they presume that person to be likely to latch onto them in a pestering way .
I can't speak for anyone else but I know that I'm intelligently conscientious , and that I'd rather be alone than with some people .
I slightly know someone who lives nearby who has a mental illness and , seems a friendly , nice enough person , albeit not especially intelligent , and , I'll be on friendly terms with them ~ I bear them no ill-will whatever but to be honest I'd never want them as any sort of close friend , and it would'nt bother me much if I never saw them again .
Which may be how a few people feel about me .
Which could be unfortunate as I can be such a loving , caring , warm , witty etc. person , and I would so love to have a compatable female partner . . . though I do almost nothing about trying to find one . . .
