I was watching some of the 2005 Live8 concert : Make poverty history : We do'nt want your money , Just your humanitarian sentiment , and , to be fair , it probably did achieve something other than providing a platform for bands and singers , including pink floyd , the who and McCartney , to revive interest in their back-catalogues .
And for the geriatric rapper 'snoop dog' to repetitively mumble 'motherf-----' , And for Madonna , before her miraculous 'disco queen' renaissance , to revel in the frisson of swearing on live bbc2 .
U2 opened it , as they were due to perform elsewhere that evening , and the highlight of it all had to be Robbie Williams , who kept asking the audience ' are you with me ? ' ;
At the time my Mum compared his command of his audience to that of Hitler : I know what she meant , but nothing sinister going on there ; ,
and 'Angels' sends tingly shivers up and down ones spine .
As I said here a while back , as reported in the Guardian magazine , RW is now 'Loving Aliens Instead' .
I so hope that the Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Hyde Park gig will be more than a limp three hour grovel ; With so many great bands , singers and musicians either confirmed or strongly rumoured to be performing . . . , and I'd have thought that the nearly 90 year old Mr Mandela should be welcome to leave anytime he feels he's had enough , and that everyone else should have the chance to party in his honour . . .
