What is Truth , part 2 .

by SloshedAndVexed @ 2008-04-30 - 22:50:14

Have you ever been utterly convinced of the truth of something , which you've later had to concede either was'nt true , or may not have been ?
I know I have   ;
Perhaps partly because during my life some people have misunderstood , or otherwise disliked me and reacted accordingly ,  and that  I'm  in some ways insecure , and generally quite unfulfilled , and because I do'nt want to be foolishly unaware I do on occasions put ' 2 + 2 + 2 ' together and draw conclusions which may well at least sometimes  be 'spot on' , entirely correct , but  it's easy to fall into the trap of , because something seems extremely  plausible , and similar things might have happened before , because it so completely makes sense , and seems to have the 'ring of truth' written all over it , that it must be true , and then  to hold that in ones  mind for so long that  it  'becomes' the  ' truth ' , when , in reality , it may never have been true at all !
I can think of instances in my life , I mean , 'real'  life , not regarding internet friends  , when that has applied , and I've heard from my Mum about my (late) Dad having for many , many years felt certain of something , which eventually he mentioned to her ,  which she could confirm was never the case .
I have quite an analytical mind , I may even have made a good detective , though we know of past cases of investigative detectives having become convinced of someones guilt , to eventually have to concede that they got it wrong .
And the moral of this ?
Oh , I suppose , to listen to your common-sense and your instincts , but , without definite proof of something , to always retain the humility to accept that you could be wrong . ( Which I'm reminding myself of .)

......and how well I remember the saying - half right and half wrong - lol

Always believed in saying I'm wrong when I discover I am...never had any problem with that...for instance, I believed in a god for nearly forty years of my life only to discover my god melted away in the mists and I found myself understanding life from a completely different perspective...hmmm...don't know whether common sense or instinct had anything to do with it though...more a case of studying it intensely for many, many years and then saw it unravel as I learned more and more about my 'beliefs'...I have to conclude now that some people need a faith to live by but it isn't necessary to lead a fulfilled life, and not be afraid of death either...it is strange as well how we can convince ourselves of the truth of something and it turns out to be completely different...big hugs...sweet dreams...

Hiya Jenny , as a sort of part-time-semi-christian and occasional atheist , who usually believes in 'the spirit world' , and quite possibly reincarnation I'd tend to agree with your conclusions , and thanks for your interesting take on what I wrote here last night , with warmest good wishes , -Martin .

I have always believed passionately in an open mind and allowing yourself to be wrong smetimes and that's ok -we are all proved wrong sometimes but it's all good it's all learning
