brief thoughts on films

by SloshedAndVexed @ 2008-02-15 - 23:58:31

Have just watched , for the first time the 1962 film 'to kill a mockingbird' which for sure is a classic ;
This week I watched the fairly recent movie 'fracture' , starring Anthony Hopkins , whose accent in it veers between welsh , faux-american and something posssibly akin to cornish .
He's quite funny in it as a man who looks set to get away with having killed his wife , defending himself in court , and coming out with double-entendre's about his 'dick' , i.e his private-detective .
It's moderately enjoyable enough which is more than can be said for 'Vacancy' which I watched the night  before , which is just about okay at best  .

Wheel of Misfortune / life , just life . .

Re .  the gambler trying to sue 'Hill's bookmakers for £2M because they let him open a new account , in his name , after he asked them to exclude him from doing so , before he lost £2M betting with them , at around £30,000 a time , including a £347,000 bet on the USA to win the ryder cup golf tournament , which they did'nt  . . .
Apparently he was a successful greyhound trainer , who only started gambling in late 2005 .
He kept opening then closing accounts with bookmakers then asking them to ban him then changing his mind .
It's tricky because 'Hill's did tell him that he would not be allowed to open a new account with them in  his name for five years .
And bookmaker's are normally very astute re. trying to stop consistently successful professional gamblers from betting with them .
However I do'nt really think that  28 year old Mr.Calvert should be considered to have a very strong case , since he kept messing William Hill bookmaker's around , changing his mind from one week to the next , and  if they had'nt let him open a new account surely another bookmaking firm would have and he'd have lost what he did all the same .
When placing bets I've always done so under the assumption that once the bet is struck there's no turning back , unless the race or whatever is declared void , which rarely  happens .
If some people are so arrogantly deluded that they think  they can consistently beat the bookmakers without spending hours studying the form ,  being very well informed , logical and self-disciplined , or , to put it another way , if they are pathologically incapable of sensibly dealing with money then what the hell can society do to legislate against that ?
And , if it does turn out that Mr.Calvert has  the law on his side in his claim against 'Hill's , will that mean that , if he'd won £2M from them , after they'd supposedly , at his request , excluded him for five years , they could have successfully sued him to pay  his winnings back to  them ?
********************
In life , it seems to me that , when something deeply , emotionally and psychologically wounding occurs , whether one awful event , or an accumulation of lesser ones  that can be permanantly scarring , leading to our carrying the pain within us for the rest of our lives .
And yet  there's much that it's possible to learn to tolerate and accept , if we have to .
