Cons/Charities/Apocalypto

by SloshedAndVexed @ 2007-10-01 - 23:10:10

My Mum had a call earlier , interrupting her supper , from a woman claiming to be from a company  giving away free burglar alarms , who wanted to know who owns the house , who lives here and if there's normally someone here during the day , number withheld of course : Sounds distinctly dogdy to me , and I do'nt know if I should email Suffolk Police to report that ?
My Mum is 78 and I hate anyone cynically taking advantage of older generation people who've been brought up to be polite , as I was but if some complete stranger is rude enough to disrupt me by asking personal questions or blatantly trying to sell me something I do'nt want or to try to wangle money out of me for any charity then I have no compunction about being rude back to them .
Not that my Mum is naive or stupid  , not at all , but for better or for worse she's a bit more trusting than I am .
She gets letters every day from charities , and 'phone calls from them from time to time . She discards most of the letters . I have given to charities and will again but only to ones who I've personally researched - If they contact me first then they can forget it .
Some of the damn charities who mail my Mother send her  coins , anything from 1p to £1   ;   I detest how they  prey upon the older , politer generation who they presumably see as a 'soft touch' ;   If you've watched those damn 'charity muggers' in the high street you'll notice how they usually approach women rather than men .
One of them once said to me " You look like a nice person , Are you a nice person ? " -  I smiled and said No ; I'm a nice person so am not going to let them waste their time by hassling me .
And did you know that , there is no legal stipulation for charities to spend any minimum percentage of revenue on the alleged good cause ?

Oh dear ; I've just watched Apocalypto , directed by Mel Gibson : At least he could try to justify the gratuitous gore of 'the passion of the christ' (which I've not seen and do'nt plan to ) by claiming  that a realistic portrayal of Christ's suffering on the cross can only serve to strengthen people's faith , but what about his Ancient Mayan Gore-Fest ?
Well it begins with a gruesome portrayal of the killing of a wild boar , then turns into an unfunny sex-comedy for a few minutes , then on to sickeningly brutal sacrificial killings and tortures ; About 1 hr and 40 minutes in it sort of gets slightly more exciting , and , I'm not sure that I'll want to repeat the depressing and nauseating experience but I'll not get rid of it just yet , as , maybe I was'nt in the mood for it and I've sometimes enjoyed films more when watching them for a second time .
